GDI is Hyundai, their badging for direct injection engines. VW’s equivalent is their TSI engines, like in my Golf, though those are also turbochargers.

Not exactly. Direct injection usually is a higher pressure, and most importantly the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber instead of indirectly.

It’s never a good idea to beat on any engine until it is properly warmed up, though I could imagine that rotaries would be particularly sensitive to it. However, the best way to warm up an engine is by driving gently, rather than just letting it idle. The same goes with carburettors, any stock setup in good tune should be perfectly drivable from the moment you start it, except in the most extreme conditions (and most carburettors I’ve seen have some kind of winter setting, either manual or automatic, to compensate for that).

Came here to make a comment about that. Lots of the V10 Audis had this buildup happen to them. Never happened to my friend’s dad when he had one, because every morning, routinely, he would give it a nice Italian tune up on the way to work. Many stories about nasty buildup from the dealer though..

When you say let it and idle and warm up, do you mean for minutes on end, like five or more? I ask because you should let a cold engine idle for at least a minute to get oil circulating properly, not starting and immediately driving off, because doing that is beyond stupid.

It depends on how quickly the carbon can build up, but the way to prevent is to do an induction service at certain intervals, possibly as often as 5k miles. I have a TDI and I do it every 10k miles because the chemical is only $20 and takes me about half an hour.

Doing the service is really easy if you can get a treatment in a spray can, and all you have to do is spray it into the intake, and if you have a non-turbo car just do it right after the MAF. If you have a turbo car you do it after the intercooler.

Some are worse than others, but all direct injection engines have carbon build up issues. Intake valve cleaning is basically a maintenance item.

Once the deposits get bad you end up getting detonation, higher octane will alleviate that but only so much.

I'll concede to the 30 seconds for my TDI. My Mercedes (2000 C230K) seems to have a built in timer though; when it's cold it maintains a high idle and gradually winds down. It does it much longer than I've seen on other cars.

Same. My V50 idles at around 1200 after cold start up for only about 10-15 seconds before it goes down to normal to remind you to let it warm up for a bit...
